Ghetto faux pas

This story - in which a staffer in Dalton McGuinty's office sent an email to her co-workers referring to a job applicant, Evon Reid, as a "ghetto dude" and accidentially cc'd Reid himself - is certainly bad.

But pretty much equally dumb was Progressive Conservative opposition leader John Tory's outrage-by-numbers response:

"That kind of language or inference is not acceptable," Mr. Tory said. "There's an awful lot of people struggling to get an opportunity, to get a hand up. They're not looking for a handout, they're just looking for a fair chance."

Right; because it's absolutely essential to point out - in the course of castigating the Premier's office for racial stereotyping no less - that a U of T honours student and graduate of a summer course in international management strategies at the University of Hong Kong (etc.) - is looking for a "fair chance" rather than a "handout".
