Good riddance.
Via KJL at the Corner, Ken Melhman's statement on Delay's decision to follow in Trent Lott's footsteps and go gentle into that good night:
“For the past 11 years, Tom Delay's leadership has helped reduce taxes and expand our economy, strengthen our national defense, provide hope to millions through welfare reform, and improve our nation's schools. Today's decision, although difficult, continues Tom Delay's commitment to put his nation, his constituents, his colleagues and his party first.”
Yeah. Thank heavens for the Hammer's selflessness in serving the country's needs. Thank heavens for the massive permanent budget deficit those tax cuts helped bring about; for the "hope" inherent in having the highest poverty rate, highest long-run poverty rate, lowest income mobility, highest income inequality and lowest living standards for the poorest decile among rich OECD countries; for the pride Red America must take from the US lagging far behind the international average in literacy (basic and scientific) among school-age kids, while retaining its unique broad-ranging indulgence of quasi-religious God-fearing superstition across the population at large.
And that's only talking about the various fruits of Delay's service to the nation. If anything, he was even more of a dedicated servant to his colleagues. From helping to steal presidential elections to pushing through illegal redistricting schemes, Delay has helped to make the advantages of being a Republican over those of being a Democrat that much more inticing. Its almost ironic how easily those ungrateful GOP recipients of his largesse shoved his sorry ass out the door at the merest hint of scandal.
