Good fucking God.
Via Ezra, John Cole has a wonderful post up about how there was no mircale in West Virginia: all but one of the trapped minors died. The initial news was premature; the press reports just got it wrong. And the governor will be regretting his talk of miracles for a long while.
Sorry for being part of such a tragic mistake.
Update: Actually, Kevin's post at the Washington Monthly suggests that the whole thing is better described sa whatever the opposite of a miracle is -- the mining company, Anker West Virginia Mining Co., owned the two coal mines with the worst accident track records in the state. Their record was so stand-out bad on the practical-results-of-safety front (man-hours lost to non-fatal injury per total hours worked that a major collapse might always have just a matter of time).
