Did Suzanne Nossel just compare the Liberals to Fatah?
I think she did.
It's so weird, with all the complexities and personalities and trends and hangups of Canadian politics, how the international (mainly American) press keeps reducing the whole thing to simply a matter of corruption and the repudiation of it. It doesn't matter how smart the reporter or pundit. There just is no other storyline about our election (unless it's the supposed repuditation of anti-Americanism).
Frankly, even the more reasonable comparison of the Liberals' (presumably Sponsorship) shinanegans to Abramoff's red-hot Washington dealings is massive anological overreach. But the Fatah comparison is just ludicrous. Afterall, Fatah hung on to a minority.
Update: Shit. That is the second time in a month I've posted "breaking" news that's been flat-wrong:
Hamas won 76 representative seats, and Fatah had 43, according to reports.
Why were the initial projections so wrong? Wishful thinking by the West? At any rate, Fatah still ain't much like the Liberals. At least we held the Conservatives to a minority.
Another Update: Eric Alterman is always good on Israel and Palestine.

The lastest news (Thursday morning) has Hamas winning over Fatah. This cannot be a good thing for that situation.
Regarding the Canadian election, it doesn't seem the Conservatives are in a position to actually push anything through that's even remotely controversial. Might not they end up a caretaker government for a time, with few/no real changes?
