Honestly, though, I think at this point the Dems need to give it up and stop trying to hide the truth about Harriet Miers being, in fact, a Democratic plant. Sure, it was devious, planting her in the Bush Texas operation, having her on the inside for all these years, just waiting for the moment when he'd appoint her to the Supreme Court so she could drag that institution off to the left for the next quarter century. Nothing but affirmative action as far as the eye can see! Ah, how sweet it would have been.
We were able to fake it well enough when it came to light that she once donated money to Al Gore's first presidential run (see Charles Kuffner blow the smoke around on that one!) and that she maxed out to the DNC during the Dukakis upsurge at the very end of the '88 campaign, so he could air more of those (actually very effective) "distorting my record on crime" ads against George H.W. It was a long time ago, wingnuts of various stripes told themselves nervously, and, afterall, she became a Republican with the rest of Texas Blue Dogs in 1989.
Sure, Miers seemed a little too "compassionate" and not Harvard enough for some. The wingnuts aren't such fools that they sensed nothing. But, honestly, we still might have pulled it off if only Miers hadn't given in to her socialist cravings and had her firm make that donation to Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign in 2000. Dick Gephardt got a cut too. Damn, Harriet. How could you have been so sloppy? Allowing your own personal weakness to defeat the greater cause of Global Socialistic Hegemony? Did you really think this would escape the sluething of those indefatiguable Swift Boat Veterans for Truth?
And just like that, the gig is up. All our dreams of Global Domination by way of the Supreme Court, smashed. The great red cloth of "Hillary" has been waved. The noble bull with its mighty horns is narrowing its eyes and pawing the ground. The eerie calm before the storm, the moist stillness in the air, pungent and urgent... you can feel the electricity in the air all across Wingnutia. Somewhere, Hugh Hewitt is nervously debating how the hell he's going to spin this one. And soon, the skies will open, the beast will charge.
Harriet Miers, stand strong. Despite your error, there's still hope. Bush is a stubborn man. Pray with him. Go clear some brush on the ranch.
Oh, note to Polipundit readers: just like Gore in '88, Hillary Clinton was not "pro life" in 2000. But you all probably knew that.
Update: Three days later, it seems that, oddly enough, the wingers couldn't care less about the HRC donation; among the multitude of complaints about Miers circulating through the conservative blogosphere, her law firm's funding of HRC and Gephardt seems to rank low on the list (as of yesterday, the Polipundit was still more upset about the '88 donation to Gore, and conservatives in general are more disgusted by the contents of Miers' email correspondance with Bush -- which indicate neither a great judicial mind nor a preternatural obsession with the evils of Roe vs. Wade.) Those wingers are unpredictable, I'll give them that.
