OK, make that "light blogging til Saturday". Two things deserve comment:
MSNBC declares: Ex-hawk Shraron Cements Role as Centrist
Good God. Ariel Sharon is not a "centrist". For instance:
Sharon has tried to mollify hardliners by vowing that Israel will never give up large settlement blocs in the West Bank, where 245,000 Jews live isolated from 2.4 million Palestinians.
I'm glad Sharon won the Likud Central Committee vote. I think the Laborites had a point in offering to give him a new coalition to keep him in power, given his current authority and support in Israel. But the fact that Netanyahu and the other crazies have challenged him from the right doesn't make Sharon a "centrist" and it's a terrible thing to start saying so (for reasons TAPPED explained yesterday). Sharon's actions over the past two years make him a more practical, less messianistic right-winger than some of his old allies. That's to his credit, in the way Bush beating back some of the Congressional GOP's early plans to further reform welfare by forcing pregnant teenagers to marry was to his credit. Bush isn't a centrist either.
Actually, Bush is Jimmy Carter, according to this parody (I hope it's a parody!) from The Note. The New York Times also made the predictable Carter analogy while reporting on Bush's meaningless (except as an excuse to get into ANWR and open up a bunch of new refineries) conservation suggestions, noting that Bush didn't make his comments in a cardigan. Our tired, tired media.
It would be a bittersweet sort of irony if, after all the awful things Bush has done, it's high gas prices (that he really can't control, and that we're much better off if he doesn't try to) that finally do him in.
